Mission:

New Hampton School prepares students for life-long learning through self-discovery, authentic relationships, civic responsibility, and global citizenship.

Purpose:

At New Hampton School, we wish to open the doors of the world to our students—both in the classroom and beyond. I am pleased to share with you a unique travel opportunity for students to learn more about global issues. On November 17–30, 2009, five to seven New Hampton School upper class (11th, 12th, or PG) students and two to three faculty advisors will travel to Wuxi, China and participate in an international exchange program with the students and faculty of the Shibei Senior High School.

The Shibei Senior High School is a public boarding/day high school in the town of Wuxi, just 40 minutes by train from Shanghai. The school has 2,100 Chinese national students, more than half of whom are boarding students that live in dormitories on campus.

During the twelve day exchange, each New Hampton student will shadow an English-speaking Chinese student through classes, participate in a service learning activity, and visit nearby cultural and recreational sites, including two days in Shanghai. Students will be accompanied by a minimum of two teaching faculty, one of whom will be our Chinese Language faculty member, Charles Custer.

Cost:

The estimated cost of the trip is $3,000 which includes airfare, visa processing, ground travel, cultural and language instruction, dormitory meals and hotel. Final cost may vary depending on the number of interested students and is subject to the availability of airfare. Below is a draft itinerary for the trip.
